Behind the Veil portrays a woman seated beside a beautifully carved Swahili doorway, her gaze directed beyond the narrow stone street before her. Though much of her face is covered, her eyes become the center of the composition, expressing thought, resilience, and confidence.
The patterned veil, weathered walls, carved doorway, and coral stone architecture reflect the rich cultural heritage of the East African coast. Together they create a portrait rooted in place, where identity, tradition, and everyday life exist side by side.
