Archive & Memory is not concerned only with the past.
Many of the photographs within this collection explore the ways memory continues to shape the present through architecture, objects, traditions, clothing, stories, and places that remain connected to earlier generations. Some works preserve visible history. Others preserve atmosphere, feeling, and the traces of human experience that continue to endure.
Together, these images form part of an ongoing visual record that honors continuity, preservation, and cultural memory. They remind us that memory is not confined to archives or museums. It lives within streets, homes, landscapes, and the everyday details that quietly connect one generation to the next.

Archive & Memory holds a special place within Sayyidah Gallery.
While every collection preserves a different aspect of East African life, this collection focuses on continuity. It reflects the traces people leave behind through traditions, architecture, personal histories, and the visual language of everyday life. Some memories are recorded in photographs. Others survive through stories, objects, places, and the experiences passed from one generation to the next.
My hope is that this collection encourages visitors to look beyond the image itself and consider the connections that link past and present. Not simply to remember what came before, but to recognize how it continues to shape the world around us today.
