The Archive Journal is an evolving space within Sayyidah Gallery, dedicated to the stories, reflections, field notes, and visual histories that surround the Archive & Memory Collection.

While photographs preserve a moment, they also preserve culture, atmosphere, identity, and human experience. This journal explores those connections through written reflections, archival observations, collection notes, and future documentary material.

Some entries focus on a single photograph. Others explore architecture, traditions, objects, or places that continue to shape East African memory. Together, they form an ongoing record of preservation and discovery.

This journal will continue to grow as new notes, stories, and archival materials are added.

Founder’s Introduction

Archive & Memory holds a special place within Sayyidah Gallery.

It began with a simple belief: photographs can preserve more than appearances. They preserve atmosphere, continuity, belonging, and the visual language of a people.

Through this journal, I hope to document the stories, observations, and reflections that exist beyond the frame itself.

What is preserved today becomes part of the memory carried forward tomorrow.
